What 4K means for an image
For screens, 4K means 3840 × 2160 pixels, also called UHD or 2160p. That's exactly twice Full HD in each direction and four times the pixels — about 8.3 million. The shape is 16:9.
Cinema "DCI 4K" is 4096 × 2160, slightly wider. It is used in film production, not on TVs or monitors; this page makes the 3840 × 2160 version.
Where a 3840 × 2160 image is useful:
- wallpapers for 4K monitors and high-density laptop screens;
- photo slideshows and backgrounds shown on 4K TVs;
- frames, title cards and overlays for 4K video;
- presentations on large displays, where Full HD pictures look soft;
- a high-resolution master copy from which smaller versions are made.
Searches often write the numbers the other way round, "2160 x 3840". For the file it matters: 2160 × 3840 is portrait (9:16), like a vertical 4K video or a phone wallpaper. This preset produces landscape 3840 × 2160.
Does your photo have enough pixels?
A typical 12 MP phone photo is 4032 × 3024 — already wider than 4K, so it covers the frame without being enlarged. A Full HD picture does not: it has to be stretched to twice its size.
| Original | Fill (crop) | Fit (no crop) |
|---|---|---|
| 4032 × 3024, landscape 4:3 | 3840 × 2880; 360 px trimmed from top and bottom | 2880 × 2160; 480 px bars left and right |
| 3024 × 4032, portrait 3:4 | enlarged 1.27× to 3840 × 5120; only the middle 2160 px kept (58% of the height lost) | 1620 × 2160; 1110 px bars on each side |
| 1920 × 1080, Full HD | enlarged 2×, nothing cut | enlarged 2×, no bars |
Fill gives a full-screen picture but cuts the edges; Fit keeps the whole photo with bars. For portrait photos on a 4K screen, Fit or a manual crop is almost always the better choice — Fill keeps a narrow band from the middle and enlarges it on top.
Fit bars are white for JPG files and transparent for PNG and WebP.
Upscaling to 4K: be realistic
Enlarging interpolates between existing pixels; it doesn't recover detail. A Full HD image upscaled to 4K contains the same information as before, spread over four times as many pixels. On a TV viewed from the sofa that may be acceptable; on a 27-inch monitor at arm's length it looks soft.
Keep in mind that a 4K screen will scale a Full HD wallpaper up by itself, with much the same result. Making a 4K file is worth it when the original has at least around 3000 px on the long side. With less, the 1920 × 1080 preset gives a smaller file and an almost identical look.
File size
A detailed 4K photo saved as JPG at 92% usually weighs roughly 1.5–5 MB. As PNG, the same photo is often 10–20 MB — fine for editing, impractical for sharing. Many sites and messengers recompress or reject big uploads; if you hit a limit, try compress to 2 MB or Compress Image.
The result keeps your file's format: JPG stays JPG, PNG stays PNG.
Limits and privacy
3840 × 2160 is well within the roughly 16.7-megapixel canvas limit that browsers (Safari on iPhone first of all) impose, so 4K works on phones too. Larger originals, for example from a 50 MP camera, are reduced to that limit when loaded — still far more than 4K needs.
The photo is processed in your browser and never uploaded. For other shapes, there are presets such as the YouTube banner, 2560 × 1440, or free dimensions in Resize Image.
