How Big Is 100 KB? Image File Sizes Explained

Upload forms love to say things like "max 100 KB" or "file must be under 1 MB" — and then say nothing about what that means for an actual photo. If you've ever wondered whether 100 KB is big or small, why your phone photo is 4 MB, or why resizing a picture sometimes barely changes its file size, this guide clears it up.

What 100 KB actually is

A kilobyte (KB) is roughly a thousand bytes. A megabyte (MB) is roughly a thousand kilobytes. So:

  • 100 KB is one tenth of 1 MB
  • A typical modern phone photo is 2–6 MB, which is 20 to 60 times bigger than 100 KB
  • A plain text email is a few KB; a song is 3–8 MB; a short video is hundreds of MB

In image terms, 100 KB is small but perfectly usable. A well-compressed JPEG at 100 KB can comfortably be 800×800 pixels and still look clean on screen. It's a bad size for a print-quality photo, and a completely normal size for a profile picture, a document scan, or an ID upload.

File size and pixel size are two different things

This is the part that confuses almost everyone. "1024 × 1024" describes dimensions — how many pixels wide and tall the image is. "250 KB" describes file size — how much disk space the compressed data takes.

They're related but not the same. Three things decide file size:

  1. Dimensions. A 4000 × 3000 photo has 12 million pixels. Halving each side to 2000 × 1500 leaves 3 million pixels — a quarter of the data.
  2. Compression quality. JPEG throws away detail to save space. Quality 90 might be 900 KB; quality 60 of the same photo might be 180 KB and look nearly identical on a screen.
  3. Content. A photo of a busy forest has far more detail to store than a flat-coloured logo. Two images with identical dimensions can differ tenfold in file size.

That's why resizing alone sometimes doesn't get you under a limit, and why re-saving a screenshot as a PNG can make it bigger than the JPEG you started with.

How to check an image's file size

  • Windows: right-click the file → Properties → Size
  • Mac: select the file → press Command + I → Size
  • iPhone: open the photo, tap the info (i) button
  • Android: open in Gallery/Photos → details or the three-dot menu

Ignore "size on disk" if you see it — upload forms care about the plain file size.

How to hit a specific KB limit

Work in this order and you'll almost always land under the limit without wrecking the picture:

1. Cut the dimensions first

If a form only displays your image at 500 pixels wide, a 4000-pixel-wide upload is pure waste. Use the resize tool to bring it down to something sensible — 1000–1500 pixels on the long edge is plenty for most web uploads. This is usually the single biggest saving, and it costs you nothing visible.

2. Then compress

Run the result through the image compressor and set a target size. Dropping JPEG quality from maximum to around 70% typically cuts file size by half or more with no difference you'd notice on a screen.

3. Check the format

Photos belong in JPEG. Logos, screenshots and anything with flat colour or transparency belong in PNG. Putting a photo in PNG can easily make it five times larger than it needs to be — swap it with the format converter if you're in the wrong one.

4. Strip the extras

Camera photos carry EXIF data, thumbnails and sometimes GPS coordinates. It's rarely more than a few dozen KB, but when you're fighting for the last 10 KB it matters — and removing metadata also stops you from publishing your home address by accident.

Rough sizes to expect

  • 10–20 KB: small avatar or icon, visible compression artifacts on photos
  • 50–100 KB: good for ID photos, document scans, forum avatars
  • 200–500 KB: full-width web images, blog headers, most social posts
  • 1–3 MB: high-detail photos, print use, original camera files
