If you&#39;ve ever wondered whether 100 KB is big or small, why your phone photo is 4 MB, or why resizing a picture sometimes barely changes its file size, this guide clears it up.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2>What 100 KB actually is\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>A kilobyte (KB) is roughly a thousand bytes. A megabyte (MB) is roughly a thousand kilobytes. So:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cul>\n\u003Cli>100 KB is one tenth of 1 MB\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>A typical modern phone photo is 2–6 MB, which is \u003Cstrong>20 to 60 times bigger\u003C\u002Fstrong> than 100 KB\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>A plain text email is a few KB; a song is 3–8 MB; a short video is hundreds of MB\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\u003Cp>In image terms, 100 KB is small but perfectly usable. A well-compressed JPEG at 100 KB can comfortably be 800×800 pixels and still look clean on screen. It&#39;s a bad size for a print-quality photo, and a completely normal size for a profile picture, a document scan, or an ID upload.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2>File size and pixel size are two different things\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>This is the part that confuses almost everyone. &quot;1024 × 1024&quot; describes \u003Cstrong>dimensions\u003C\u002Fstrong> — how many pixels wide and tall the image is. &quot;250 KB&quot; describes \u003Cstrong>file size\u003C\u002Fstrong> — how much disk space the compressed data takes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>They&#39;re related but not the same. Three things decide file size:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Col>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Dimensions.\u003C\u002Fstrong> A 4000 × 3000 photo has 12 million pixels. Halving each side to 2000 × 1500 leaves 3 million pixels — a quarter of the data.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Compression quality.\u003C\u002Fstrong> JPEG throws away detail to save space. Quality 90 might be 900 KB; quality 60 of the same photo might be 180 KB and look nearly identical on a screen.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Content.\u003C\u002Fstrong> A photo of a busy forest has far more detail to store than a flat-coloured logo. Two images with identical dimensions can differ tenfold in file size.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Fol>\n\u003Cp>That&#39;s why resizing alone sometimes doesn&#39;t get you under a limit, and why re-saving a screenshot as a PNG can make it \u003Cem>bigger\u003C\u002Fem> than the JPEG you started with.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2>How to check an image&#39;s file size\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cul>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Windows:\u003C\u002Fstrong> right-click the file → Properties → Size\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Mac:\u003C\u002Fstrong> select the file → press Command + I → Size\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>iPhone:\u003C\u002Fstrong> open the photo, tap the info (i) button\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Android:\u003C\u002Fstrong> open in Gallery\u002FPhotos → details or the three-dot menu\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\u003Cp>Ignore &quot;size on disk&quot; if you see it — upload forms care about the plain file size.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2>How to hit a specific KB limit\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>Work in this order and you&#39;ll almost always land under the limit without wrecking the picture:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>1. Cut the dimensions first\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>If a form only displays your image at 500 pixels wide, a 4000-pixel-wide upload is pure waste. Use the \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fresize-image\">resize tool\u003C\u002Fa> to bring it down to something sensible — 1000–1500 pixels on the long edge is plenty for most web uploads. This is usually the single biggest saving, and it costs you nothing visible.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>2. Then compress\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Run the result through the \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fcompress-image\">image compressor\u003C\u002Fa> and set a target size. Dropping JPEG quality from maximum to around 70% typically cuts file size by half or more with no difference you&#39;d notice on a screen.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>3. Check the format\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Photos belong in JPEG. Logos, screenshots and anything with flat colour or transparency belong in PNG. Putting a photo in PNG can easily make it five times larger than it needs to be — swap it with the \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fconvert-image\">format converter\u003C\u002Fa> if you&#39;re in the wrong one.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>4. Strip the extras\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Camera photos carry EXIF data, thumbnails and sometimes GPS coordinates. It&#39;s rarely more than a few dozen KB, but when you&#39;re fighting for the last 10 KB it matters — and \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fremove-metadata\">removing metadata\u003C\u002Fa> also stops you from publishing your home address by accident.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2>Rough sizes to expect\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cul>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>10–20 KB:\u003C\u002Fstrong> small avatar or icon, visible compression artifacts on photos\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>50–100 KB:\u003C\u002Fstrong> good for ID photos, document scans, forum avatars\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>200–500 KB:\u003C\u002Fstrong> full-width web images, blog headers, most social posts\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>1–3 MB:\u003C\u002Fstrong> high-detail photos, print use, original camera files\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\u003Ch2>Everything happens on your device\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>All of cutbg&#39;s tools run entirely inside your browser.
